Sam Dunn does some pretty sick looking designs. I’ve featured her work before in the post about Holy Roar Records and it was her comment on that post that saw me flicking through her own work with a certain green eyed jealousy at her illustration skills. Her style would fit well with a design agency like Go Media but with a British rather than American take on things.

Sam makes great use of hand drawn typography but she also experiments. This poster was created by photographing plasticine. I’m a sucker for that muscle tissue style illustration in the background as well.

The detail in this poster is stunning.

This artwork forms part of a series of flyers each with the same layout but very different appearance for the skull.

It’s illustrated by David Cook and the rest of his illustrative work, although not band related, is well worth checking out. He seems to be a favourite among guys looking for very distinctive, very cool tattoos.

As you can see like the Rolo Tomassi EP the actual artwork is a a full 10 panel monster. He does crazy cool t-shirt designs often sported by bands (such as Gallows – see his blog) and intricate illustrative artwork.

A quick squint at flickr with the key words “gig flyer” brings up some truly awful examples of the medium. True examples, if any were needed, to justify the phrase “just because you own [insert Adobe product name here] it doesn’t make you a designer”. However dig deeper and there are some gems; triumphs of layout, masters of colouring & illustrators extraordinaire. Above there is a wonderful example of a club flyer for a Luke Vibert show – cool because he’s one of my favourite electronic artists and after nearly 2 years of knowing someone I discovered Luke was his brother. The flyer features a hand drawn (modified) version of TheSerif in a heavy weight (correct me if I’m wrong) which works beautifully with the frankly bizarre illustration and other hand drawn elements. The light shade of sky blue and baby pink are always a winning combination.

This crazy illustration fascinates me – the text alignment around the image isn’t perfect but as far as grabbing my attention it works.

There are a number of bold colours over textured paper but this one really caught my attention by keeping to such a simple colour pallette.

I’m really liking how the designer has taken something as overdone as “psychedelia” and not only made it feel really modern through the use of a lightning bolt motif but achieved a psychedelic piece with a limited colour pallette.

Running with the lightning bolt motif here again I really like the limited use of colour and the great use of white space.

This reminds my of illustrator Pete Fowlers Monsterism island without even drawing a monster! Again subtle use of colour and neat texture make this design a winner.

Alternatively this flyer relies on its use of anything but sublte colouring to achieve a great effect that immediately makes me think “festival time”.

Here just three colours are used to keep the message straight and to the point.

More lightning bolts! I do like them so. The collage effect here also makes great use of white space.

This flyer perfectly represents production techniques of the time. A simple photo (a reference to the Smith’s own artwork) with a simple overlay of the details allowing for fast and cheap reproduction on any photo copier.

Really like the hand drawn type on this one especially as the construction lines are still visible.

This flyer is one of my own that I designed for my clubnight Flyswatter. It is two sided with further information on the back including venue information and a list of bands are played. It too has a subtle texture pattern applied which limits some of the vibrance of the colours.

Another single colour print that allows for ease of reproduction. The flyer fits with Sonic Youths scrappy DIY sound and is representative of flyers from the scene.

I love the simple concepts behind this video and the competence with which that idea was brought through to the end product. It was created and directed by Simon Deshon with friends helping out with the animation process. The Voluntary Butler Scheme are also incredibly good and they’ll be releasing the single Multiplayer on March 2nd. Their myspace is here.

Claims have come in via the comments section (thanks commenters) that this video is a rip-off of a video for the band Henry Fiats Open Sore. To reiterate my comment from below I’d never seen the Henry Fiats Open Sore vid until now. Simon has gone further with the technique, i.e. the singer from VBS spinning and increasing in size, but there are also striking similarities between the videos; the general style and animation technique, multiple images being thrown down in quick sucession, the backing singers etc. What do you think?

Friends Vs Records has been releasing some great stuff recently and are going to be going nuts in the rest of the year with upcoming releases.

I designed this 7inch sleeve for Dinosaur Pile-Up using some of their original artwork whilst giving the whole thing my own slant. I think the result is pretty unique and compliments there grunge based sound. It’s the fastest selling Friends Vs Records release to date and it’s pretty much sold out. I think Piccadilly Records have the last few that are available any where. I’m really pleased with how it turned out and am proud to say that my artwork is gracing many savvy listeners homes around the country.

You can check out Dinosaur Pile-Up yourself by heading on over to their myspace and check out the Friends Vs Records rosta by heading on over to their website.

M83 are currently holding a competition for video makers. This is my favourite video so far. It’s really trippy and seems to use the clever visual illusions of Shigeo Fukuda combined with the daftness and general LSD based nature of the Beatles film Yellow Submarine. This effort has been illustrated and animated in Photoshop & Premiere Elements by illustrator Dax Norman. Dax’s website is full of weird and wonderful illustrations and his vimeo channel has a few more videos that are worth checking out. Dax’s original blog post about the video is here.

I haven’t really looked into many of the other videos but it’ll be interesting to see who triumphs when they finally pick a winner.

Rolo Tomassi are one of my favourite bands and not least because of their consistently great artwork. It’s all pretty much down to one guy, Simon Moody aka Lined With Ghosts, a freelance illustrator from somewhere in Nottinghamshire. The artwork for the new Rolo Tomassi re-issue is perhaps my favourite to date. As you can see from the image below the CD packaging folds out to reveal a further four panels of the spiky looking hand drawn mountain range. Officially known as a 10 panel digi-file with foam ‘button’; whilst I haven’t met a foam button yet that can actually hold the CD in place this is still an excellent final product. The mountain range can be seen as a representation of the spiky angular synth-prog-hardcore although I don’t feel this was an intentional metaphor.

Inside the whole image is reproduced in small beneath the CD and additional panels with lyrics and information about Rolo Tomassi are all decorated with an intricate background pattern. Moody seems to hand draw all his illustrations before transferring them to his computer for colouring. The result is a very pleasing effect where the felt pen bleeds in places adding to the roughness of the artwork an effect that is very difficult to fake in paint shop or illustrator.

Of course I could be wrong about certain aspects as I’m currently basing my opinion on the reduced size images within this post. The CD is available for pre-order and will be released towards the end of this month or the beginning of March. Should you want to pick up a copy its available through the Holy Roar Records Store. It’s also available with a t-shirt which has the whole mountain range image emblazoned across the chest. That’s the one I’m plumping for.
