A confident director with a strong graphic voice might get inspired or even try copy what he sees. The outcome would still be original because his hand, eye or intellect processed the material. The problem with this director is that he hasn’t got that talent.

I have been toying with the idea that maybe both videos, reliant on the hand moved cell technique, are simply so limited by that technique that the heavy similarities are down to coincidence as there are only so many ways in which the technique can be used. This is where my feelings towards both videos are currently falling.

I don’t agree with the “there are no originals” any more sentiment though.

Rip off? Hmmm…. It’s likely the maker of the Voluntary Butler Scheme video had not seen RIOT; after all they’re both based on the technique of hand moving cels.

I’m in the creative industry and it’s frustrating just how often we come up with an idea, run it past colleagues to hear “oh you mean exactly like…?”

There are no originals anymore, kids.

Still… the Riot clip is the better video here.

This is a total rip-off. I’m glad to see that the film/animation/music is much much much much crapier than RIOT which is both art and amazing storytelling craft.

I’d never seen the Henry Fiats Open Sore vid until now. Simon has gone further with the technique, i.e. the singer from VBS spinning and increasing in size, but there are also striking similarities between the videos; the general style and animation technique, multiple images being thrown down in quick sucession, the backing singers etc.
